STYLING Clare Hoey
Setting out at 22 years old to pursue her life’s calling, young Australian writer/director CLARE HOEY chose London over Los Angeles, feeling it would better suit her path. That instinct paid off. Five years later Clare was able to give up her day job to focus on writing and directing full time, making waves on the film festival circuit and achieving success with her stand-out short films. Back in Sydney last year, having scooped best comedic film at the 2024 Australian Women’s Film Festival–and with two feature films in development–we jumped at the chance to shoot this breakout talent, and learn about her inspiring path to realising her dreams. Stay tuned!

All clothing featured Clare’s own.
So, how do you stay true to your Grand Plan when it takes years and years to realise the dream? By making what you love. By surrounding yourself with people who also want to make what they love.

My comfort zone is writing, because you have limitless time and drafts to edit, and nobody ever has to see anything if you decide it’s not “good enough” – I had to leave that comfort zone to direct, which is definitely a lot scarier, but it feels like a natural progression of how I have always told stories.
